Awoniyi returns from injury as Nottingham Forest beat Tottenham Hotspur to boost UCL hopes
Published: April 21, 2025
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi made his return from a hamstring injury during Nottingham's 2-1 impressive victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.
Awoniyi suffered the injury after his participation in Forest's 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the City Ground.
The Nigerian International started on the bench with Nuno Esprinto Santo starting Chris Wood and Anthony Elanga upfront.
The decision paid dividends when they combined effectively to secure the second goal just 16 minutes into the match.
After Anderson opened the score for Forest, Wood found the back of the net with a well-placed header from a superb cross delivered by Anthony Elanga.
This goal marked Wood’s 19th of the season, a significant contribution in his 31 league appearances.
With Forest hoping to secure the victory, Awoniyi replaced Chris Wood for the final fifteen minutes of the game.
However, Awoniyi's struggles this season have been evident, as he has managed to net only two goals in 28 matches across all competitions.
His performance has placed him behind Wood in the team's attacking hierarchy, further complicating his chances of regaining a regular starting spot.
The Nigerian international's recent form has also impacted his position in the national squad, leading to his omission from the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
With the season approaching its conclusion, Awoniyi faces an uphill battle to turn his fortunes around and earn a spot in the Super Eagles for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament.
As Nottingham Forest continues to push for a place in the UEFA Champions League, Awoniyi will be eager to revive his form to attract suitors ahead of the upcoming summer window.
