Dortmund to open talks with Chelsea over keeping midfielder on Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle's radar
Published: April 22, 2025
German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are reportedly working on a deal to retain Carney Chukwuemeka for the 2025-2026 season.
Chukwuemeka was not part of Enzo Maresca's plans at Chelsea during the first half of the season, prompting a loan switch to Dortmund in the winter transfer market.
Now fully fit at Borussia Dortmund, the Aston Villa academy graduate is starting to demonstrate why he was once considered one of the Premier League's most exciting young talents.
The 21-year-old has appeared in ten matches for Borussia Dortmund, and netted his first goal for the club in a 4-1 rout of SC Freiburg on April 5.
Internationally, his form has not gone unnoticed, with Nigeria coach Eric Chelle closely monitoring him as the Super Eagles aim to lure him from England's youth setup.
According to transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund want to keep Chukwuemeka in their ranks beyond the summer and plan to begin official negotiations with Chelsea as soon as possible.
Chukwuemeka's loan to Borussia Dortmund included a purchase option valued between €30 and €35 million.
Should Dortmund clinch a spot in Europe, there's a realistic chance the Austrian-English-Nigerian starlet could continue with the club, either permanently or on another loan spell.
The midfield all-rounder has a contract with Chelsea until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
