'Felt tired' - Al-Wehda coach explains why big-game player Ighalo watched from bench in loss to Al-Ahli
Published: April 23, 2025
Al-Wehda head coach Jose Daniel Carreno has revealed that Odion Ighalo’s absence from the starting lineup in their 3-2 defeat to Al-Ahli was due to a combination of fatigue and tactical considerations.
The decision to bench the Nigerian striker, who has been pivotal for the Knights of Mecca, came as a surprise to fans after his consistent performances in recent games.
Ighalo has notched six goals and two assists in 29 appearances this season, including one goal and two assists in the last five league matches, during which Al-Wehda claimed three victories.
Speaking to reporters in a post-match press conference, as reported by aawsat, Carreno explained his reasoning for the move was due to a combination of fatigue and tactical considerations.
"Ighalo played in previous matches and felt tired, and this is from a physical standpoint," the coach said.
"As for the technical aspect, Al Ahly's two central defenders are accustomed to playing with Ighalo's quality, and I preferred to play with faster players up front."
In the absence of their experienced forward, Al-Wehda fell short at King Abdul Aziz Stadium, increasing pressure as they fight to avoid relegation from the Saudi Pro League.
Ighalo, widely regarded as a big-game player, is expected to make a return in the crucial fixture against Al-Okhdood Club at Prince Hathloul bin Abdulaziz Sports City on Thursday, May 1.
Carreno is hopeful that the former Super Eagles striker will bounce back and help steer the team to safety.
