20 goals and counting: What Arokodare said after scoring in Racing Genk's 1-1 draw against Antwerp
Published: April 24, 2025
Racing Genk striker Tolu Arokodare remains optimistic about his team's title hopes in the Belgian Pro League despite a 1-1 draw against Royal Antwerp on Wednesday night.
The in-form Nigerian forward was once again pivotal for Genk, netting a crucial equalizer in the 71st minute to cancel out Michel Ange Balikwisha's opener for the hosts.
Rising above defenders Van den Bosch, Odoi, and goalkeeper Lammens, Arokodare powerfully headed home a precise cross from Kayembe to notch his 20th league goal of the season in 35 appearances.
The result leaves Genk second in the playoff standings, trailing Club Brugge by just a point. That gap could widen to four if Brugge triumph over Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday night.
Despite the implications for the title race, Arokodare is choosing to focus on the positives.
"I can't really say anything much, all focus is on Sunday," the 24-year-old told Het Laatste Nieuws after the match.
"I see it as a point gain. We didn't lose the game. So I don't see a loss, I just see that we gained a point.”
Genk will meet Antwerp again in the reverse fixture this Sunday, and Arokodare is confident of a stronger performance.
"It was a good challenge and an interesting games for the fans, hopefully it would be a better result for us on Sunday."
When asked about Antwerp's change in approach, Arokodare admitted he hadn't seen their previous games in detail but acknowledged a shift in their play.
"I haven't watched their game but I have seen the result and I don't think they play like this in the previous games. So good for them and good for us."
Genk remain in the mix in the Belgian Pro League title race, but Arokodare insists the team is keeping their focus on each game as it comes.
"I am not focused on the league table, I am focused on winning every game. We haven't lost any confidence, we are focused on winning every game and we're trying to win every game."
The Nigerian international will look to maintain his impressive goal-scoring form as he aims to help Racing Genk clinch their fifth league title.
