PL2 playoff: Nigerian right-back captains Manchester United to 4-2 victory over Everton
Published: April 25, 2025
Nigeria-eligible right-back Habeeb Ogunneye captained Manchester United as they came from behind twice to beat Everton 4-2 in the Premier League 2 playoff at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night.
While Ogunneye played the full game, the in-form Spanish-Nigerian striker Victor Musa was an unused substitute for Manchester United.
The visitors had a perfect start as Martin Sherif bent the ball in from the edge of the penalty area to give the Toffees the lead but Ethan Wheatley, with a brilliant touch, brought United level ten minutes later.
Martin Sherif scored his second goal in the 33rd minute as Everton went into the break 2-1 up.
Five minutes into the second half, Ethan Wheatley leveled things up again after winning the ball from an Everton defender.
With nineteen minutes left on the clock, Tyler Fletcher gave Manchester United the lead with a lovely finish, before Sékou Kone bent the ball home from distance in the 84th minute to seal the win.
Ogunneye appeared in fifteen Premier League 2 matches in the regular season and had an assist to his name, and also featured in the EFL Trophy and UEFA Youth League.
The highly-rated defender has trained with United's first team on multiple occasions this season and was named in the travelling squad to Fenerbahce for the group stage of the Europa League.
Manchester United U21s will face the winner of West Ham v Sunderland clash in the quarterfinal of the Premier League 2 playoff.
