Bluebirds to play in third tier: Super Eagles defender will not follow relegated Cardiff into League One
Published: April 26, 2025
Jamilu Collins' spell as a Cardiff City player has ended in disappointment, with the Bluebirds suffering relegation to the third tier of English football on Saturday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Cardiff City’s survival hopes ended following a goalless draw with West Brom at the Cardiff City Stadium, leaving them five points adrift of safety with one round of the Championship left to play.
For the first time in twenty-two years, Cardiff City will be competing in League One, but their Nigeria international will not follow the Welsh side into the third tier of English football.
Collins has been declared surplus to requirements since January 2025 and the Bluebirds attempted to flog him in the winter transfer market without success.
There were discussions in February 2025 about terminating his contract, which would have allowed him to join a new club as a free agent, with the transfer windows in Turkey and MLS still open at the time.
Those upstairs at Cardiff City have already informed the Super Eagles star that his contract will not be renewed.
Signed from German outfit SC Paderborn in 2022, he has roughly two months left on his Cardiff City contract.
The fullback's return from a pre-season injury was met with challenges, as strong competition from teammates kept him out of the matchday squads.
He has not figured for the Welsh club since November 30 when he logged an hour in a 2-2 draw versus Coventry City.
Collins is set to leave Cardiff City after making 44 appearances during which he scored one goal and provided four assists.
