NFF target Okonkwo keeps clean sheet as Wrexham seal historic back-to-back-to-back promotions
Published: April 27, 2025
Arthur Okonkwo's Wrexham have been promoted from the League One to the Championship following their 3-0 rout of Charlton Athletic at STōK Cae Ras on Saturday.
Wrexham knew that victory against the Addicks would seal their promotion with a game to spare and they got the job done, courtesy of goals from Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith (2).
Stockport can no longer catch the Red Dragons, who hold a five-point advantage over the third-placed side with just one game remaining.
In another fairytale season, history was made in North Wales and English football as Wrexham became the first team to ever earn back-to-back-to-back promotions.
Okonkwo played a key role as the Red Dragons were promoted for the third consecutive season, positing a remarkable eighteen clean sheets in thirty-two appearances in the third tier of English football, including yesterday's win versus Charlton.
His performances have not gone unnoticed as he is known to be on the radar of Nigeria Football Federation's Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen.
Former Nigerian Federation president Amaju Pinnick — an advocate for players with dual nationality — recommended Okonkwo to Gernot Rohr a few years ago, but the former Super Eagles coach, who admitted having the goalkeeper on his radar, told Pinnick he was too young for a senior national team call-up.
After impressing during his loan, the Hale End Academy graduate was signed permanently by Wrexham last summer as part of their smart recruitment strategy.
