FA Cup: Awoniyi denied by the woodwork as Nottingham Forest lose to Manchester City
Published: April 27, 2025
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi came close to scoring but couldn't prevent Manchester City from securing a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Wembley to advance to the final of the Emirates FA Cup, where they will face Crystal Palace.
Awoniyi, who started the game on the bench, was introduced in the second half to replace Chris Wood, with Forest already trailing after goals from Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol.
The Nigerian's introduction sparked life into Forest's attack, as they threatened Manchester City on several occasions in a bid to stage a comeback.
Awoniyi was unfortunate not to pull one back with about ten minutes remaining when his flicked effort rattled the crossbar.
Morgan Gibbs-White tried to capitalize on the rebound with a header, but City goalkeeper Stefano Ortega produced a smart save to deny him.
Despite Forest’s late pressure, Manchester City held firm to book a place in the final, where they will meet Crystal Palace, who comfortably defeated Aston Villa on Saturday.
Awoniyi impressed during his 19-minute cameo, providing a focal point for Forest's attack and posing problems for the City defence.
It has been a challenging season for the 27-year-old striker, who has managed just one goal in 24 Premier League appearances.
However, he will hope to build on this promising performance in the remaining league matches as Forest continue their battle to secure a European spot.
Awoniyi will also aim to finish the season strongly to boost his chances of earning a recall to the Super Eagles ahead of the Unity Cup tournament in London and the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
