'No longer favourites for the title': Belgian football expert urges Genk to stop overrelying on Arokodare
Published: April 29, 2025
Belgian football expert Stef Wijnants has cautioned Racing Genk against placing too much responsibility on Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare as the club continues its push for the league title during the Championship playoffs.
Arokodare, who has been a standout performer throughout the season, has accounted for all the goals scored by Racing Genk in their last three games, none of which they won, with two losses and one draw.
Genk have suffered a dip in form, causing them to drop from the top spot they held for much of the season.
Speaking on Genk's prospects of securing a fifth league title, Wijnants stated that the club can no longer be considered favourites in the title race.
“They still have everything in their own hands, but that is not really the case now,” Wijnants told Het Belang van Limburg via Voetbal Primeur.
"The most important thing is that they find playfulness in their game again. They are no longer favourites for the title.”
He also urged the club to reduce its dependence on Arokodare, insisting that success cannot rest solely on the striker’s shoulders.
"The loss of that pressure may be liberating for some players. It will be necessary, because Tolu will not be able to help Genk win the title on his own," Stef Wijnants added.
Arokodare has enjoyed a breakout season in Belgium, scoring 22 goals and contributing seven assists in 41 matches across all competitions.
His efforts earned him a debut call-up to the Super Eagles in March, where he featured in Nigeria's 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali and their 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo.
The 24-year-old’s performances have also sparked interest from clubs in the Premier League and Turkish Super Lig, raising the possibility of a big summer move.
With only a few games remaining in the Belgian Pro League title race, Genk will be hoping their Nigerian star can inspire a late push for silverware.
