Thirsa De Meester: Belgium ahead of Nigeria for greatest talent produced by Genk in recent years
Published: May 03, 2025
The Royal Belgian Football Association are believed to be ahead of the Nigeria Football Federation in the race for the services of promising Racing Genk forward Thirsa De Meester, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Born in Lommel, Thirsa De Meester qualifies to represent Nigeria's Super Falcons through her family heritage.
The 18-year-old is widely regarded as the greatest talent produced by Racing Genk Ladies in recent years.
She is provisionally cap-tied to her country of birth, having featured in competitive matches for the U17 and U19 national teams, and has also been capped at U16 level.
Thirsa De Meester is back on the pitch after a frustrating spell that kept her sidelined for nine months due to injury.
She made her comeback from injury in February 2025, logging twenty minutes against the national champions
Anderlecht.
Although Thirsa De Meester currently plays for Belgium, she stays updated on the Super Eagles and Super Falcons by following the senior national teams on social media.
It remains to be seen whether she will follow in the footsteps of another Belgian-born player of Nigerian descent, Cyriel Dessers, who committed his international future to Nigeria's senior national team after training with Belgium’s youth team.
The Belgian Federation beat the Nigerian Federation in the recruitment battle for another Belgian-born Racing Genk alum, Marvin Ogunjimi.
