Goal drought over: Relief for Lookman as Super Eagles star scores in Atalanta's big win over Monza
Published: May 04, 2025
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman ended his six-game goal drought in Serie A with a crucial strike as Atalanta cruised to a 4-0 victory over Monza on Sunday afternoon.
Lookman, who started the season strongly for the 2024 Europa League winners, had gone without a goal in league matches against Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio, Bologna, AC Milan and Lecce.
However, the Nigerian international returned to scoring form in emphatic fashion, netting Atalanta’s third goal as they continue their push for a Champions League spot.
The 27-year-old capitalized on a well-worked team move early in the second half.
After a neat layoff from Mateo Retegui, Lookman showed great composure to beat the Monza goalkeeper and finish clinically — his first goal since scoring against Juventus on March 9.
The strike takes his tally to 19 goals and seven assists in 38 appearances across all competitions this season.
With the goal drought now behind him, Lookman will be eager to maintain his form as Atalanta look to secure a top-four finish and a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
His return to form will also be welcomed by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is preparing for the Unity Cup tournament in London this June, as well as the resumption of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
