U20 Afcon: Three key fixes Flying Eagles coach Zubairu needs to make before facing Kenya
Published: May 05, 2025
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles face a crucial final Group B match against Kenya on Wednesday at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with their quarter-final hopes hanging in the balance after a goalless draw with Morocco in Cairo.
Aliyu Zubairu’s team, who opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Tunisia, were unable to break down a disciplined Moroccan side at the 30 June Stadium.
Despite early promise, Nigeria struggled to impose themselves over 90 minutes and were fortunate to escape with a point after Morocco created the better chances.
While Clinton Jephtah and Precious Benjamin showed flashes of attacking intent, and Daniel Bameyi led a solid defensive line, the Flying Eagles lacked fluency in midfield and cutting edge in the final third.
With four points from two games, Nigeria remains unbeaten but must avoid defeat against Kenya to secure progression.
Ahead of Wednesday’s showdown, Zubairu will be looking to make three crucial improvements.
1. Sharpening Attacking Precision
The Flying Eagles failed to register a single shot on target against Morocco, highlighting their inefficiency in the final third.
Crosses were often overhit, while decision-making in advanced areas lacked clarity. Zubairu will need to ensure his forwards make better runs and that midfielders offer timely support inside the box.
2. Enhancing Midfield Composure and Ball Retention
Morocco dominated possession for large portions of the second half, with Nigeria’s midfield unable to string together meaningful passes.
To avoid similar struggles against Kenya, Zubairu may introduce a deeper-lying playmaker or reconfigure his midfield to allow for better control and link-up play.
3. Increasing Tempo and Intensity in Transitions
Nigeria’s transitions from defence to attack were often sluggish, giving Morocco time to regroup. Against Kenya, quick, purposeful ball movement will be key.
Zubairu could encourage his full-backs to overlap more and demand faster decisions from his midfielders when turning defence into offence.
