Super Eagles striker returns to team training at Bayer Leverkusen amid Real Madrid links
Published: May 08, 2025
Victor Boniface has put himself in contention to return to Bayer Leverkusen's matchday squad on Sunday when they tackle Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
For the first time since January 18, 2025, the Super Eagles striker was not called up for a Bundesliga match as Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw by SC Freiburg last weekend.
Boniface was unavailable for selection due to a thigh injury but his fitness issues now appear to be over.
The 24-year-old trained individually on Tuesday, and the following day, he was pictured training with his teammates.
There is speculation over the future of the Nigeria international despite the forward having a contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
Boniface was set to leave Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window but a proposed transfer to Al-Nassr fell through as the Saudi club opted to sign Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran instead.
According to Madrid-based public television station Telemadrid, via Fussballtransfers, manager Xabi Alonso, who has been lined up as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti desperately wants to sign a new centre-forward.
The Spanish football tactician is considering three strikers, namely Bayer Leverkusen duo Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick, and Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres.
Since joining Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface has 32 goals and 12 assists in 61 matches across all competitions.
