'Ups and downs' - Dortmund coach provides fitness update on Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka
Published: May 09, 2025
Borussia Dortmund manager Nico Kovac remains hopeful that star midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka will be available for Sunday's decisive Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen at the Bay Arena.
Chukwuemeka, who has been a revelation since arriving on loan from Chelsea in February, was deemed a doubt for the weekend encounter after missing multiple training sessions during the week.
The 21-year-old was notably absent from group training on Friday, instead working on individual fitness alongside teammates Emre Can and Jamie Gittens.
Despite the limited involvement, Kovac offered a positive update during his pre-match press conference, as reported by Kicker.
"We took them out today and scheduled a training review; the three are expected back on the pitch tomorrow," the Dortmund boss said at Friday's pre-match press conference, according to Kicker.
Kovac acknowledged that Chukwuemeka has been managing some physical issues, saying, "There are ups and downs; he hasn't participated in every training session in the last week."
However, the manager appeared confident that the midfielder will be ready in time for the high-stakes showdown.
Since his move from Chelsea, Chukwuemeka has been instrumental in Dortmund's push for a UEFA Champions League spot, impressing with his technical prowess, composure on the ball, and offensive contributions.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle reportedly hoping to convince him to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Chukwuemeka's availability will be a significant boost to Dortmund as they look to solidify their position in the top four of the Bundesliga.
