Arsenal coach Arteta offers an explanation for Nwaneri's limited appearances in recent weeks

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has offered insight into the recent reduction in playing time for teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, stating that the decision was based on match context and rotation.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Liverpool, Arteta addressed questions about Nwaneri’s involvement.
The 18-year-old, who has been one of the most talked-about academy prospects at the club, has not featured as regularly in recent weeks after making several appearances earlier in the season.
"There are moments when players are used more and less, and he's played a lot. He's played probably more than anybody expected, for sure," Arteta said, as quoted by Arsenal's official website.
"And in the last few games, because of the games and the context, we decided not to play him that much. It can change very quickly."
Nwaneri made headlines in the 2022/23 season when he became the youngest-ever Premier League player at just 15 years old.
Since then, he has continued his development through the club’s academy and earned minutes with the first team during the current campaign, drawing praise for his composure and creativity.
Arteta’s comments suggest that the young midfielder remains very much in the club’s long-term plans, despite his reduced playing opportunities.
With the season entering a critical phase, Arteta may continue to manage Nwaneri’s exposure carefully.
