U20 Afcon third-place playoff: Three Egyptian players Flying Eagles must watch out
Published: May 17, 2025
As Nigeria’s Flying Eagles prepare to face Egypt in the third-place match of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, they will need to be wary of three key Egyptian players who could heavily influence the outcome at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
1. Abdel Monem Tamer (goalkeeper)
Egypt’s shot-stopper Abdel Monem Tamer has been both a wall and a workhorse for the Young Pharaohs.
With 18 saves — the second-most in the tournament — Tamer has repeatedly bailed his side out of trouble.
Despite conceding seven goals, his quick reflexes and penalty-saving prowess were instrumental in Egypt’s quarter-final triumph over Ghana.
The Flying Eagles, who have struggled to score with just three goals in five matches, must find a way past the tournament’s most tested keeper.
2. Mohamed El Sayed (midfielder)
A tireless presence in Egypt’s midfield, Mohamed El Sayed has been pivotal in both breaking up opposition play and initiating forward thrusts.
His composure under pressure and ability to distribute the ball effectively will be a concern for Nigeria, especially given the Flying Eagles’ difficulty in creating clear-cut chances.
Shutting down El Sayed could disrupt Egypt’s rhythm and starve their attack of service.
3. Omar Fathy (forward)
In a team that has found goals hard to come by in the knockout stage, Omar Fathy remains Egypt’s most dangerous forward.
His intelligent runs and ability to exploit space behind defenders offer constant threat.
With Nigeria’s defensive record among the best in the tournament — just three goals conceded — maintaining concentration against Fathy’s movement will be vital.
Nigeria, despite their attacking struggles, boast a solid defence and an impressive record against host nations.
But Egypt, unbeaten in third-place games and buoyed by home support, will pose a formidable challenge.
