'Why should we be afraid?' - Russia defender fires warning to Super Eagles ahead of friendly
Published: June 03, 2025
Russia international defender Danil Krugovoy has sent a strong message to the Nigerian national team ahead of their international friendly, insisting the hosts are under obligation to win on home soil despite acknowledging the strength of their African opponents.
The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled for June 6 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, as part of Russia’s summer friendlies.
The fixture will be followed by another international clash when Valery Karpin’s men travel to Minsk to face Belarus on June 10.
Krugovoy, who recently featured in CSKA Moscow’s Russian Cup triumph, underlined Russia’s determination to deliver a result in front of their supporters.
Speaking to Match TV, the 27-year-old defender was confident and dismissive of any suggestion that Nigeria’s attacking strength could pose a major threat.
"There are no jitters, we are playing at home," Krugovoy said. "I hope that many fans will come, Luzhniki will be completely packed. Nigeria is a good team, we are obliged to beat them at home."
With Nigeria expected to field a competitive squad featuring Europe-based stars, the match has been billed as a tough test for Russia, who have had limited international fixtures in recent years due to ongoing geopolitical restrictions.
Krugovoy, however, believes the Russian side is fully prepared and focused on their own game plan.
When asked how the team would respond if faced with a flurry of goals from the Super Eagles, he replied confidently: "Them? Why should we be afraid? We will push off from our game. We will try to win."
The fixture at Luzhniki is expected to draw a large crowd, with home fans eager to see their national team in action against one of Africa’s most successful footballing nations.
Nigeria, three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, will view the match as key preparation ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
For Russia, it represents an opportunity to test their progress under Karpin and to build momentum following domestic success for players like Krugovoy.
