Arsenal midfielder on Eric Chelle's radar named in England squad for U21 Euro

Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has been included in England’s squad for the upcoming UEFA U21 European Championship in Slovakia, further highlighting his rapid rise and growing international profile.
The 18-year-old, who has impressed with his maturity and technical ability at such a young age, is also eligible to represent Nigeria through his heritage.
Nwaneri’s inclusion in Lee Carsley’s 23-man squad comes after a strong season with Arsenal and the England youth setup. He will join a talented group of players as the Young Lions aim to defend the title they won in 2023.
Despite his eligibility, Nwaneri is yet to receive any formal approach from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) or newly appointed Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.
The situation has sparked discussions among Nigerian football fans and analysts who fear that another top talent could slip through the nation’s grasp if proactive steps are not taken.
Coach Chelle, who recently took over the reins of the Nigerian national team, has expressed an interest in recruiting players of Nigerian descent who are eligible to represent the country.
Nwaneri’s name is believed to be on his radar, but no official contact has been made so far.
The midfielder’s continued development at Arsenal and his exposure on the international stage with England will only increase interest in his international future.
As Nigeria looks to build a squad capable of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, securing dual-nationality players like Nwaneri could prove vital.
For now, all eyes will be on Nwaneri’s performances in Slovakia as he represents England at the U21 EURO Finals.
Whether he remains with the Three Lions or one day switches allegiance to Nigeria remains to be seen.
