Onuachu's replacement: Southampton working on deal to sign USMNT striker
Published: June 30, 2025
Southampton are preparing for life without Nigeria international Paul Onuachu, who has agreed a deal with Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.
The towering striker is making a return to Trabzonspor, where he enjoyed a prolific 2023–2024 campaign, netting 17 goals in 25 appearances.
Onuachu struggled for goals and consistently at Southampton, managing just four in 40 all-competition appearances.
According to Sky Sport Germany, Southampton have identified Damion Downs as Onuachu's potential replacement.
The Saints are in advanced talks with Cologne over the signing of the United States international, and have made a bid of eight million euros to the newly promoted Bundesliga club.
Last season, Downs finished as Cologne's top scorer in the second tier of German football, netting 10 goals in 29 matches while producing five assists.
Onuachu and Downs are both tall, physically imposing strikers, with the former towering at 6ft 7in and the latter also boasting an impressive 6ft 4in frame.
They thrive on aerial duels and are natural targets for crosses and long balls.
Downs is currently with the United States national team at the Gold Cup, having made his debut for the North American side under coach Mauricio Pochettino.
The 20-year-old has a contract with Cologne until June 30, 2026.
