Official: Nigerian left-back signs scholarship deal with Brentford after leaving Liverpool
Published: July 04, 2025
With a statement on the official website, Premier League club Brentford have announced the new intake of scholars for the 2025-2026 season.
As per Premier League rules, all players in their U17 year are required to start the 2025-2026 season on a scholarship agreement, before they are permitted to sign a first professional football contract on or after their 17th birthday.
Nigeria-eligible defender Nathaniel Ogungbemi is among Brentford's eleven new scholars who have begun their journey in the professional development phase of academy football.
Providing insight into Ogungbemi, head of academy recruitment Michael Adesida described him as a left-back who joined the academy after a stint with Liverpool.
He is strong in one-v-one defensive situations and brings composure and dynamism to the backline.
Ogungbemi made his competitive debut for Brentford U18s team while still a schoolboy.
The promising fullback has been promoted to Brentford U18s on a permanent basis with effect from the 2025-2026 season.
Jai Bansoodeb, Chris Cohalan, Micaiah Fanoiki, Jovan Kasujja, Reuben Lawal, Felix Lyon, Layton Nicholls, Josh Oladapo-Gamu, Beau Redknapp and Josh Zetter-Plummer have also signed scholarship terms with the Bees.
Gary McDermott will lead Brentford U18s for the upcoming season, less than a year after joining the club as head coach of the U13s and U14s.
