Super Eagles-eligible striker gets new shirt number at Man Utd ahead of 2025-2026 season

Super Eagles-eligible striker Chido Obi has been handed a new squad number at Manchester United ahead of the 2025/26 campaign as he continues his rise through the ranks at Old Trafford.

The 17-year-old, who joined United from Arsenal last summer, has impressed fans and coaches alike with his powerful displays and maturity beyond his years.

After shining for the youth side, Obi made his senior debut in February, replacing Casemiro during a Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

He went on to make six more appearances in the top flight, earning praise for his intelligence, movement, and ability to trouble opposing defenders with his imposing physical presence.

Obi capped off a promising debut season by scoring twice during Manchester United’s post-season tour at the Hong Kong stadium, helping the team come from behind to claim a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong.

Ahead of United’s preseason opener against Leeds United in Stockholm, the club has confirmed a shirt number change for the teenage sensation.

Obi will now wear the number 32 jersey, moving up from the No. 56 shirt he wore last season.

He becomes the first United player to wear the No. 32 shirt since goalkeeper Sam Johnstone during the 2016/17 season.

The Danish-born forward, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria internationally, is expected to be part of United’s preseason tour, where he will look to continue building momentum and push for more senior minutes under manager Ruben Amorim.

With a new number and growing confidence, Obi will hope to take another step forward in his development in the 2025/26 season as he eyes a regular role in the first team.
