'Tosin is not Chelsea standard' - Obi Mikel urges former club to make a move for Arsenal CB
Published: July 12, 2025
Ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has urged his former club to strengthen their defence by pursuing one of Arsenal’s standout centre-backs, Gabriel Magalhães or William Saliba.
Mikel, a Premier League and Champions League winner with Chelsea, expressed concerns over the current defensive options, specifically questioning the quality of Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile.
"Tosin is a good player, but he’s not a Chelsea standard defender. Benoit Badiashile, the same thing," Mikel told talkSPORT.
Mikel emphasized the need for Chelsea to acquire a top-tier centre-back to pair with their existing squad, pointing to Arsenal’s defensive duo of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba as the benchmark.
"We need to bring another top centre-back like the likes of [William] Saliba or Gabriel [Magalhaes],” he urged, highlighting the pair’s crucial role in Arsenal’s robust backline, which has been instrumental in their recent Premier League title challenges.
Gabriel, in particular, has earned plaudits for his commanding presence, physicality and composure, making him a potential dream signing for Chelsea.
However, prising the Brazilian defender away from Arsenal would be no small feat, given his integral role in Mikel Arteta’s setup.
Chelsea’s current defensive options, including Adarabioyo, who joined from Fulham in 2024, and Badiashile, have shown promise but have yet to cement themselves as consistent starters under Enzo Maresca’s management.
