Zaragoza-born Nigerian defender agrees new contract with Liverpool
Published: July 20, 2025
Premier League champions Liverpool are on the verge of announcing that Spanish-born Nigerian defender Wellity Lucky has signed a new long-term contract with the club.
According to This Is Anfield, the Reds have reached an agreement with the 19-year-old centre-back that will keep him at Anfield until at least June 30, 2028.
Lucky, who has already trained with the first team under new manager Arne Slot, was one of two Nigerian players offered fresh terms at the end of last season, alongside Emmanuel Airoboma.
Liverpool have successfully warded off interest from clubs in Germany and Spain to secure Lucky's future.
Born in Zaragoza, Lucky began his football journey with local sides San Gregorio Arrabal and Real Zaragoza before relocating to England with his family.
He joined Liverpool's Academy as an U13 player and signed his first professional contract in April 2023.
Internationally, he has represented England at U15 and U16 levels and received a call-up to Spain's U17 squad for a friendly against Italy in January 2023, although he did not feature.
Last season, Lucky made 17 appearances across the UEFA Youth League (7), Premier League 2 (9), and EFL Trophy (1).
His involvement in Liverpool U21s' emphatic 8–0 win over Celtic in a pre-season friendly on Saturday further suggests his contract renewal has been finalised.
