Middlesbrough make move to hijack Akpom's Birmingham deal despite club-to-club agreement in place

Middlesbrough have made a late move to hijack Chuba Akpom's deal with Birmingham City despite the Blues and Ajax Amsterdam reaching a club-to-club agreement for the transfer of the Arsenal academy product.

Voetbal International journalist Tim van Duijn reports fresh developments in Akpom's proposed move to Birmingham City, with Middlesbrough making a late attempt to hijack the deal.

Middlesbrough have made an approach to Ajax, though it remains unclear whether they are pursuing a loan or a permanent deal for the striker.

Ajax are eager to offload the Super Eagles hopeful and prefer a permanent transfer to remove his wages from the books.

Ajax were set to loan out Akpom to Birmingham City for the entirety of the season, with a promotion-triggered clause included in the agreement.

Under the terms of the deal, Birmingham would be obliged to make the transfer permanent if they secure promotion to the Premier League next season.

Akpom spent three seasons at Middlesbrough before switching to Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2023 for a fee in the region of 12 million euros.

The 29-year-old made a splash in his final season at the Riverside Stadium scoring 28 goals in 38 matches to win the Championship Golden Boot award.

He was also crowned EFL Championship Player of the Season, voted PFA Championship Players’ Player of the Year, and earned a place in the Team of the Season.
