Eric Chelle sweating over fitness of Ozoemena, Abdulrafiu as Super Eagles hold recovery session

The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria held a recovery session on Wednesday morning as they seek to bounce back from their narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening match of Group D at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The team, led by head coach Eric Chelle, is now fully focused on their must-win encounter against Sudan on Tuesday, August 12, with progression to the knockout stages still within reach in the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The morning session placed emphasis on both tactical refinement and player recuperation following a physically demanding opener.

However, preparations are overshadowed by injury concerns. First-choice goalkeeper Henry Ozoemena Ani of Enyimba FC is dealing with a knee issue that threatens his participation against Sudan.

Rivers United defender Taiwo Abdulrafiu, who was substituted in the 68nd minute against Senegal after struggling to contain their pacey attack, is also nursing a knock picked up during the match.

The medical team is working to assess their conditions ahead of the next fixture.

Nigeria’s loss to Senegal came through a costly defensive lapse, with Leonard Ngenge’s mistake allowing Christian Gomis to score the game’s only goal.

While the performance showed moments of attacking promise, the inability to convert chances proved decisive. The squad now faces a short turnaround to address those shortcomings and restore confidence.

Chelle’s side, featuring key domestic league talents such as striker Sikiru Alimi and midfielder Michael Tochukwu, will be looking to improve fluidity in the final third and maintain defensive discipline.

With only four teams in Group D – Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Congo – every point carries significant weight.

A defeat against Sudan would put Nigeria’s qualification hopes in serious jeopardy, while a win would set up a decisive final group match.

The Super Eagles B have a proud history in the CHAN, having claimed bronze in 2014 and silver in 2018.
