'Rafiu scored a goal' – Viktoria Plzen forward on risky 3-man strike force in win v Rangers
Published: August 13, 2025
Viktoria Plzen striker Matej Vydra has shared his thoughts on the club's bold attacking set-up in their 2-1 victory over Rangers in a UEFA Champions third qualifying round second leg tie on Tuesday evening at the Doosan Arena, praising teammate Rafiu Durosinmi for finding the net.
Four minutes before the interval, the Nigerian forward opened the scoring with a powerful first-time strike that flew past Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland into the net.
Manager Miroslav Koubek adopted an aggressive approach in the Champions League qualifier, fielding three strikers in a high-risk system.
Koubek adopted an all-or-nothing approach, knowing his side had to score at least three unanswered goals to force extra time after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the first leg at Ibrox.
Vydra lined up alongside Prince Adu and Durosinmi in an unfamiliar formation that had not been tested in training.
Despite admitting his own performance was below par, the former Watford star believes the attacking trio could become a valuable weapon for Viktoria Plzen in upcoming fixtures.
In quotes relayed by ISport, Vydra said: "We didn’t play like this in training either, it was new.
"Prince and Rafiu are strong, they showed it today. Rafiu scored a goal, but it didn’t really work for me and Prince, which is a shame.
"This could be an option in the future if the coach decides to use this line-up.”
Durosinmi was on the verge of joining Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2024 but his transfer to the Bundesliga club did not work out due to injury.
The 22-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with Viktoria Plzen.
