'Not as bad as first feared' – Rangers boss provides update on Dessers that will delight Eric Chelle

Rangers have received a major boost ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League play-off against Club Brugge, with striker Cyriel Dessers' ankle injury less serious than initially feared.

The Nigeria international had limped off during Rangers’ 4-2 aggregate victory over Viktoria Plzen in the qualifiers, raising concerns over his availability for the high-stakes European clash.

Manager Russell Martin provided an encouraging update on Dessers' condition during a press conference on Friday, easing fears of a prolonged absence.

The latest update from Martin will be sweet music to the ears of Nigeria coach Eric Chelle, who is almost certain to have the Rangers striker on his provisional squad list for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Dessers was one of the standout performers as Nigeria clinched the Unity Cup in May 2025, registering both a goal and an assist during the tournament in London.

The Belgian-born player will be cap-tied to the Super Eagles should he feature in next month's competitive fixtures.

"Cyriel’s injury is not as bad as first feared. Tomorrow will be too early, but we’re really hopeful he can be involved on Tuesday," Martin was quoted as saying by Rangers official website.

His comments suggest that the 30-year-old striker could be available for Rangers’ pivotal match against the Belgian side, a fixture that could determine the club’s entry into the Champions League group stage.

Martin explained that initial fears were heightened by the manner in which Dessers went off during the Plzen game.

"Everyone feared the worst the way he went off [in midweek], but it was a small issue and nowhere near as big as it could have been," the manager added.

The injury was sustained when Dessers’ studs caught the turf, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Despite lingering soreness and stiffness, Martin emphasized the club’s efforts to have the forward fit for the European encounter.

"He’s a bit sore and stiff still, but everyone has worked really hard to give him the chance to be fit for Tuesday," he said.
