Nigeria target Nwaneri misses chance to impress England coach as Arsenal beat Man Utd
Published: August 17, 2025
Arsenal claimed a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in a match that saw England coach Thomas Tuchel in attendance, keeping a close eye on Three Lions players.
The decisive moment came early when Riccardo Calafiori scored from a corner, but the spotlight also fell on 18-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who missed a key chance to showcase his talent on a big stage.
Nwaneri, who broke through impressively last season, was linked with a departure from Arsenal before the start of the season but ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term deal this month.
Despite his experience with England at youth level, the midfielder remains eligible to represent Nigeria, and he is among the dual-national players being targeted by the Nigeria Football Federation and Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.
The London-born talent continues to attract attention, with Chelle reportedly monitoring his progress ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
While the missed opportunity against Manchester United was disappointing, Nwaneri’s overall promise remains undeniable.
His pace, vision, and composure in midfield make him one of Arsenal’s brightest prospects and a player to watch as he seeks to cement a regular spot in the first team.
This match offered a platform for Nwaneri to impress, and despite the miss, his potential to make an impact at both club and international level remains firmly on the radar.
