Official: After Emmanuel Fernandez, Rangers sign another defender who wants to play for Nigeria
Published: August 18, 2025
Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have confirmed the signing of Super Eagles-eligible fullback Jayden Meghoma on loan from Brentford, subject to international clearance.
The 19-year-old becomes the second Nigerian defender to join the Light Blues this summer, following the arrival of centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United.
Like Fernandez, Meghoma has expressed a desire to represent Nigeria at senior level.
Although capped by England at U15 through to U19 level, the Brentford loanee has admitted that playing for the Super Eagles remains a genuine option, given his Nigerian heritage.
He told Brentford's official website in January 2025: "I’ve grown up in England my whole life. My dad is Nigerian and that is an important part in my life as well.
"Nigeria are doing quite well, [playing for them] is a consideration because you never know what happens in football.
"It’s a decision that might come later on in life, but for me right now in the youth teams, England is the best choice."
Meghoma has signed a loan deal with Rangers until the end of the 2025–2026 season and takes the club's tally of summer signings to ten.
This will be his second loan spell since joining Brentford last year, having spent the second half of last season at Preston North End, where he made 14 appearances in all competitions, including 12 in the Championship.
A product of Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton youth teams, Meghoma signed his first professional contract with the Saints in 2023 before switching to Brentford.
He made his Premier League debut for the Bees against Chelsea in December 2024 and previously registered four senior appearances for Southampton.
