Is cap-tying appearance in doubt? Nigeria LB Agu still struggling with injury ahead of WCQs
Published: August 27, 2025
Nigeria left-back Felix Agu is facing injury concerns ahead of the Super Eagles internationals in September 2025.
The former Germany U21 international has been named in Nigeria's provisional 31-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda's Wasps and South Africa's Bafana Bafana.
Because of this injury, there is doubt over whether he will play in those matches.
His potential absence is significant because if Agu were to play, it would be a cap-tying appearance for Nigeria, permanently ruling out any possibility of switching allegiance to his country of birth, Germany.
Agu picked up a knock during a training session last week after landing awkwardly in a challenge.
Despite the concern, he went on to feature for the full 90 minutes in Bremen’s 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park, where his misplaced passes unfortunately led to two goals conceded by his side.
According to German outlet Weser Kurier, the defender has since been unable to train with the team and remains a major doubt for this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
The club are said to be monitoring his progress closely and could make a final decision on his availability either on Friday or on matchday.
With Werder Bremen already battling several defensive injuries, the club is considering a load management plan for Agu to prevent aggravating the problem.
