Osimhen faces fitness race ahead of Bafana Bafana showdown as Chelle reveals nature of injury
Published: September 06, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed uncertainty over Victor Osimhen’s availability for Tuesday’s clash against South Africa's Bafana Bafana.
The Galatasaray striker picked up an ankle injury during the first half of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday and was forced off, with Cyriel Dessers coming on in his place.
The 26-year-old, who failed to shake off the effects of a tough challenge, now faces a race against time to be fit for the crucial encounter at the Free State Stadium.
Providing an update on Osimhen’s injury, Chelle stated that the medical team will assess his progress on Sunday to determine his availability for the clash with Bafana Bafana.
"Victor Osimhen? I don’t know," Chelle revealed during his post match reaction.
"He has pain in his ankle, and we will see tomorrow when he wakes up. After the match, we will consult with the doctor and the physio."
Nigeria sit third in Group C with ten points, trailing leaders South Africa by six.
To keep their qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico alive, the Super Eagles must claim victory against South Africa to close the gap.
Coach Eric Chelle will be hoping Osimhen recovers in time to feature, as his presence would provide a major boost to Nigeria’s attack in the crucial showdown.
