'I haven't scored for Nigeria' – Ola Aina reveals ambition before Bafana Bafana showdown
Published: September 09, 2025
Super Eagles fullback Ola Aina has revealed his personal wish ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa, admitting he is still chasing his first international goal.
The Nottingham Forest defender, who is expected to feature in Tuesday’s clash at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, said his biggest desire is to help Nigeria secure victory but confessed he would also love to finally open his scoring account for the national team.
"Obviously to win the game. I don't know, I haven't scored for Nigeria before,” Aina told CALLY YouTube channel.
Aina also reflected on his missed chance in Nigeria's 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, admitting he slipped at the decisive moment.
"I fell over. Normally that would (go inside the net) you know. It went over to somebody in a better position and he scored," he added.
Meanwhile, the Nottingham Forest fullback expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, describing it as a lifelong dream he hopes to fulfill.
"Big dream of mine hopefully we can still make it happen. I have joked around with some friends and family that I have to make this one because the one after this one I am going to be an old guy.
"You have to give way for the new generation. Hopefully, like I said we can make this one and I fulfill a dream."
With three matches left to play, Nigeria sit third in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa, and must win to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
