Is cap-tying appearance in doubt? Werder Bremen fullback Agu subbed due to injury
Published: October 04, 2025
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle faces an anxious wait over the fitness of Werder Bremen fullback Felix Agu, just days before the Super Eagles begin preparations for their 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying matches.
The former Germany U21 international has been named in Chelle's 23-man squad for the upcoming fixtures against Lesotho and Benin.
A competitive appearance in either match would officially cap-tie Agu to Nigeria, ending any future possibility of representing his country of birth, Germany.
Agu's participation has been thrown into doubt after he picked up an injury during Werder Bremen's Bundesliga clash with FC St. Pauli.
The 26-year-old was forced off shortly before halftime after going down under a challenge in the box in the 42nd minute, prompting referee Sören Storks to halt play.
Unable to continue, he was replaced by cap-tied Switzerland international of Nigerian descent Isaac Schmidt with Bremen leading 1-0 courtesy of Samuel Mbangula's earlier strike.
Before the setback, Agu had been lively down the flanks, contributing to several attacking moves, including a dangerous cross into the opposition area in the 17th minute.
As of press time, the extent of Agu's injury remains unclear, with further medical tests expected to determine the severity of the issue.
The development will be a concern for Chelle, who is keen to have his full squad available ahead of the crucial qualifiers against Lesotho on October 10 and Benin on October 14.
