'Nigeria can only have 17 points' - Hugo Broos insists Bafana Bafana have the edge
Published: October 06, 2025
South Africa coach Hugo Broos expressed confidence in Bafana Bafana's chances of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, stating that his team holds the upper hand over Nigeria in the race.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of their crucial encounter against Zimbabwe, Broos emphasized the importance of the fixture, describing it as the most decisive in their qualification journey.
The Belgian tactician noted that a win would take South Africa to 17 points, a total he believes will be enough to maintain their edge over their competitors, Nigeria and Rwanda.
"That game on Friday is maybe the most important, he told reporters.
"If we can win that game you have 17 points. Nigeria, if they win their two games, they can only have 17 points, same thing for Rwanda."
Although Benin currently lead the group, Broos dismissed their chances of qualification, insisting they are unlikely to win their remaining two matches against Nigeria and Rwanda.
"But Benin cannot win their two games because they play against Nigeria and Rwanda, therefore the game on Friday is so important for us to win it."
Despite a recent points deduction for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March 2025, South Africa still sit second in the group, three points above Nigeria.
Broos, however, dismissed any fears about losing momentum, expressing full belief in his players' ability to qualify.
"There are no doubts, there have never being doubts from my side. I will try to transfer that to the group tomorrow at a meeting we have, like always. I believe in that group," he added.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles must win their remaining fixtures against Lesotho and Benin to keep their 2026 World Cup hopes alive, while relying on South Africa and Benin-currently ahead in the standings-to drop points.
