'Best striker in the world' - Eric Chelle raves about Osimhen ahead of WCQs against Lesotho, Benin
Published: October 09, 2025
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed his delight over the return of star striker Victor Osimhen to the national team squad ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.
Osimhen, who plies his trade with Turkish champions Galatasaray, suffered a chin injury during Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo in September, which ruled him out of the subsequent clash against South Africa.
During his recovery period, the 26-year-old missed three matches across all competitions for his club.
However, the forward made a successful return to action in Galatasaray’s 1-0 win over Alanyaspor late last month, paving the way for his recall to the Super Eagles squad for the decisive fixtures.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, Chelle praised the striker's commitment and quality, describing him as the best in the world.
"For us, Victor is the best striker for me in the world. But we have lots of strikers in these team we have lots of players who can make the difference at any moment," the Malian tactician said.
Chelle also emphasized the need for focus and collective effort, noting that the team must rely on available players to get the job done.
“Sometime you have some players, sometimes you don't have some players, but you need to stay focused on the players who are ready now.”
Nigeria currently sits third in Group C with 11 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa by three points.
The Super Eagles must secure victories in their final two games to keep their qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico alive.
