NFF president discusses Eric Chelle, World Cup qualifiers playoffs and Super Eagles players

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation Ibrahim Musa Gusau has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continental playoffs against Gabon in November.

Speaking on the appointment and performance of head coach Eric Chelle, Gusau acknowledged that the decision initially raised questions among some Nigerians.

"Eric came in despite the fact that a lot of people have some reservation, they ask how do we got to that and that, but thank God till now at least he has justified to Nigerians why he can be the coach of the Super Eagles," Gusau said in an interview with the Super Eagles media team made available to allnigeriasoccer.com.

He highlighted Chelle’s record in the World Cup qualifiers, noting that the coach handled six matches, winning four and drawing two.

Gusau added that "if we have some little resemblance of that in the first four matches we could have not been where we are today."

Gusau also reflected on the challenges faced by the team, citing the involvement of three different coaches prior to Chelle’s tenure.

He stated, "Three coaches managing a lot of people say that, but they don’t want to really talk about how did it happen. It’s a necessity that we can’t do otherwise.

"But we thank God we are here and we are going to work hard to make sure that at least we get to the ultimate desired goal."

According to the NFF President, preparations for the playoff matches have already begun.

"We are aware of the countries that we are going to play with, and we are also aware of the venue. So as I’m talking to you right from today, we have even started preparation for that,” he said.

Gusau emphasized the players’ commitment and determination, noting that they now recognize the importance of qualifying for the World Cup.

"The level of commitment and zeal of the players going to the World Cup is a very, very important thing to them and their career more than even how Nigerians look at it."

He also praised the spirit demonstrated by the team in their recent matches, asserting that the players are ready for the challenges ahead.

Gusau confirmed that the NFF is receiving full support from the government and relevant authorities to ensure adequate preparation for the playoff against Gabon.

Victory would see Nigeria face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final African playoff for a place in the intercontinental tournament slated for Mexico in March 2026.

The Super Eagles secured their playoff spot following a 4-0 victory over Benin in their final qualifier, with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen scoring a hat-trick.
