Can 7-goal striker Onuachu earn a Super Eagles recall for WCQ playoff against Gabon?
Published: November 02, 2025
Paul Onuachu has enjoyed a strong start to the 2025‑26 season with Trabzonspor, scoring seven goals in 11 Turkish Süper Lig appearances.
Yet despite his impressive form, the 31-year-old faces an uphill battle to secure a recall for the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.
Onuachu last featured for Nigeria in June 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against Benin.
Since then, he has not been a regular under coach Eric Chelle, who has increasingly relied on forwards already integrated into his tactical system.
Extended absence from international duty could count against Onuachu, as Chelle appears focused on players familiar with his approach.
The competition for striking positions in the Super Eagles is intense.
Victor Osimhen remains the first-choice centre-forward, consistently delivering in both domestic and European competitions.
Tolu Arokodare has impressed with his versatility and has already registered two goals for Nigeria.
Akor Adams, who also recently earned a call-up, has similarly found the net for the national team and continues to adapt well to the squad’s style of play.
Both forwards provide mobility, pressing ability, and fluid movement—qualities central to Nigeria’s attacking approach.
Onuachu’s traditional target-man style, relying on height and aerial prowess, may not align as closely with Chelle’s tactical priorities.
While his goal-scoring record this season is notable, the national team’s emphasis on interchange between forwards and recent international experience could limit his chances of selection.
As the Super Eagles prepare for a decisive clash against Gabon, Onuachu’s current form may not be enough to guarantee inclusion.
The coaching staff will likely weigh tactical fit and familiarity with the squad over club performances, leaving the towering striker’s World Cup playoff involvement uncertain.
