Super Eagles boycott Tuesday training over bonus row ahead of WCQ playoff against Gabon
Published: November 11, 2025
Super Eagles players have reportedly boycotted training in protest over unpaid bonuses and allowances ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup playoff clash against Gabon in Morocco.
The Nigerian team opened camp at the Rive Hotel in Rabat on Sunday and held a successful opening training session on Monday.
However, despite the promising start, the players reportedly refused to train on Tuesday, citing unresolved issues over bonuses and allowances.
It was reported that the team has not received bonuses and allowances for nearly two years.
However, according to Pooja on social media, the National Sports Commission has intervened, confirming that all outstanding payments to the team have been cleared before Tuesday.
He clarified that the current standoff is not about previous arrears but a new demand by the players for special bonuses ahead of the fixture.
The players reportedly cited that DR Congo and Gabon have made similar financial requests to their respective governments.
Additionally, the team is said to be demanding payment for the Zimbabwe match and camp allowances totaling around $100,000.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles officials have distanced themselves from the ongoing dispute, stating that the matter is strictly between the players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The position taken by the team officials has made it difficult to resolve the matter internally.
Nigerians will be hoping the dispute is swiftly resolved so the team can focus fully on the crucial encounter against Gabon.
