2026 WCQ playoff: Nwabali awaits medical clearance ahead of Super Eagles clash with Leopards

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that a decision is still pending on the availability of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for Sunday evening's 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff final against Democratic Republic of Congo's Leopards.

Nwabali played through the pain barrier during the closing stages of the second half of Nigeria's semifinal win over Gabon after sustaining an injury.

Initially, it was thought he would be replaced by Udinese's Maduka Okoye, but the Chippa United man was able to soldier on, helping the Super Eagles navigate extra time following Mario Lemina's 89th minute equaliser.

Nwabali did not train fully on Friday, joining other key players who logged significant minutes against Gabon, including Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Fredrick, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

Meanwhile, the two goalkeepers who remained unused against Gabon, Okoye and Amas Obasogie, completed their training drills.

Manager Eric Chelle is awaiting a full medical report before confirming whether Nwabali will start against the Leopards, a match that could see him earn his 27th cap for the Super Eagles.

Nwabali has faced scrutiny in recent months for inconsistent performances but Chelle has expressed confidence in the South Africa-based shot-stopper.

Nigeria will face DR Congo on Sunday in Rabat, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026.
