Eagles Show Afcon Credentials With Win Over Venezuela
Published: November 15, 2012
The Super Eagles defeated the Venezuela National Team 3 - 1 on Thursday morning in one of their build-up games to next year's African Cup of Nations, billed to be hosted by South Africa.
While the South Americans had plenty of possession and had two goals disallowed, Nigeria was sharper in front of goal.
Dynamo Kiev's Brown Ideye opened scoring for the Stephen Keshi tutored side four minutes after the restart. Right wing-back Solomon Kwambe, making his debut, slipped in a fine cross to Ideye for his first international goal in five appearances.
Real Betis midfielder Nosa Igiebor scored the pick of the goals, blasting a 30 - yarder past the Venezuelan goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez in the 53rd minute for Nigeria's second.
With 20 minutes left, Juan Arango played a through ball to substitute Frank Fletscher, who slotted the ball past the outstanding Austin Ejide from 18 - yards.
Any hope of the Venezuelan supporters witnessing a late comeback by The Burgundy was dashed by Lazio youngster Eddy Onazi, who scored in stoppage time off an assist from debutant Shola Ameobi.
Nigeria's next Afcon warm-up is against Angola at a training camp in Faro, Portugal in late December.
