Mikel Obi Confesses: I Hate Europa League
Published: April 09, 2013
Nigeria international Mikel Obi has confessed to hating the Europa League, UEFA's second grade competition.
Chelsea failed to progress to the knock out stages of the Champions League and are now condemned to Thursday night football.
The Londoners clash with Rubin Kazan in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals in 48 hours time.
''No disrespect to the Europa League but when you get that buzz, and you hear the Champions League song, it’s different.
''And we have been used to it, to those nights, those special nights, and we want to get them back - we want to be involved again in the Champions League next season.
''I don’t even know the Europa League song... I have been here seven years and I have never played football on Thursday nights.
''I think for us and the fans, Champions League football is what this club has always been involved in, and that is what we as players, want to achieve,'' Mikel Obi told London Evening Standard.
Mikel Obi would be playing Champions League football again if Chelsea maintain their third position in the Premier League standings at the end of the season.
