Gbenga Arokoyo Stoned By Rival Supporters In Sweden
Published: April 09, 2013
Mjallby's game with Djurgarden on Monday night was abandoned in the first half after Nigerian defender Gbenga Arokoyo was hit by a pear thrown from the stands.
Mjallby, the away team, had taken the lead in the 37th minute . As the goal was being celebrated, supporters threw objects, one of which hit Gbenga Arokoyo. He fell to the ground and cried out in pain.
Speaking on the incident to Expressen.se, Gbenga Arokoyo said: ''I wanted to celebrate with teammates. I was so glad we had scored.
''After the celebration, I got back and they hit me with something. It was so painful, I could not control it. I thought that there was something dangerous. I thought it was a stone. But it was not, it was probably a fruit or something.''
He added: ''I thought something bad had happened to me. But the doctor checked, I'm just a little swollen. I will be okay.''
This is the first time Gbenga Arokoyo is getting involved in a game that is cancelled as a result of crowd violence.
'' I feel disappointed. We had just come into the game. I thought the team would do better after the goal and maybe make another goal. It is unfortunate that it would end like this,'' said Arokoyo.
