Brighton New Boy Balogun Wary Of Iceland: They Drew With Argentina
Published: June 20, 2018Brighton & Hove new signing Leon Balogun is wary of the Icelandic National Team ahead of the Super Eagles second Group D match at the ongoing World Cup.
Two years after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in the European Championship, the Nordic country caused another upset after earning a famous 1-1 draw against two-time world champions Argentina.
Manchester City's Sergio Aguero gave Argentina the lead on 19 minutes only for Alfred Finnbogason to restore parity for the tiny European country few minutes later, and another highlight of the match was goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson saving a spot kick from the best player on the planet, Lionel Messi.
''Nobody imagined that Iceland would take two points from Argentina, that makes them special,'' Balogun told reporters.
Two Icelandic players, striker Alfreð Finnbogason of FC Augsburg and SV Sandhausen midfielder Rúrik Gíslason, represent German clubs, and Balogun will be aware of their qualities.
Last season, Finnbogason netted three goals against Balogun's Mainz but the Nigerian did not feature in both games.
In the 2016-2017 campaign, Balogun prevented the Iceland star from scoring in a Bundesliga clash at the WWK ARENA on September 18, 2016.
