'I don't know how Yusuf did his selection' - Ex-West Brom defender on Costa Rica friendly
Published: November 09, 2022
Retired Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has admitted that he does not know how Salisu Yusuf picked his squad for the upcoming friendly against Costa Rica.
Costa Rica will do battle with the three-time African champions at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica (San José) on Thursday morning, starting from 0300 hours Nigerian time.
With most of the European Leagues yet to break for the 2022 World Cup, only footballers plying their trade in the domestic championship, eighteen in total, were called up for the trip to the Central American nation.
Udeze has urged the home-based players to take advantage of their chance as it would be difficult for them to get invitations to the Super Eagles in future.
"The thing is that I don't know how Salisu Yusuf did his selection. The players are in Costa Rica already," the former West Brom left-back stated on Brila FM as he responded to a question on team selection.
"I do not subscribe to enforcing players on the coach at whatever level. The coach has the prerogative of inviting players.
"Salisu Yusuf has taken the decision. Whether his players are able to execute what the coach wants is a different thing.
"The players have the opportunity now so they have to make use of it because they may not get it again," Udeze further posited.
The Super Eagles were beaten 1-0 by Costa Rica the last time both nations met in a friendly, back in 2011.
