Portugal sweating over the fitness of Porto star ahead of friendly against Nigeria
Published: November 16, 2022
Portugal head coach Fernando Santos is sweating over the fitness of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa before their friendly against three-time African champions Nigeria.
Costa missed the last two training sessions held by the Portugal national team, on Monday and Tuesday, due to muscular problems and it remains to be seen whether he will be available for their final training session on Wednesday.
Twenty five of the twenty six players named in Portugal's World Cup squad, including Cristiano Ronaldo, trained on Tuesday under the guidance of Fernando Santos.
Costa, 23, has earned seven caps for the Portuguese national team since making his debut in October 2021.
Experienced Roma glovesman Rui Patrício and the uncapped Wolverhampton Wanderers star José Sá are the other goalkeepers in the Portugal squad and one of them is likely to be in goal against Nigeria.
Portugal's training session on Wednesday starts at 1730 hours, with the first fifteen minutes open to the media.
Nigeria will take on Portugal at the Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon on Thursday, November 17, starting from 1945 hours Nigerian time.
