Despite beating Uganda, Flying Eagles are still far from their best - major weakness highlighted
Published: March 03, 2023The Flying Eagles defeated Uganda 1-0 in one of the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, which is being held in Egypt.
While Nigerians are celebrating the Flying Eagles' latest victory, fans should not be carried away, and here is why.
Ladan Bosso's boys have played four games so far in the competition and have scored four goals. One scored from a set piece, two from brilliant individual efforts, and the other from an own goal.
The evidence shows that the young Eagles need help in the attack. This is surprising because they scored goals for fun during the preparatory matches before the competition started.
The Flying Eagles' poor return in front of the goal is evident from the fact that the team has scored only three goals from the 17 shots they have attempted so far and that only one of Nigeria's forwards has found the back of the net.
This is a problem that needs an urgent solution from coach Ladan Bosso.
The team has had to rely on the defense and the brilliance of young goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso and they haven't disappointed so far.
They have conceded just one goal in the competition which they let in against the young Teranga Lions in their first match.
However, with the competition getting to the latter stages, the attack will have to step up for the team to stand a chance of winning an eighth title.
While Nigeria is the most successful nation in the tournament, with seven titles, recent evidence shows they are beginning to relinquish their dominance.
The Flying Eagles failed to qualify for two of the last three editions and could only come fourth the last time they participated.
For the Flying Eagles to reestablish their dominance by winning the title, Ladan Bosso must get his team to start firing on all cylinders as soon as possible.
