Is it time for Peseiro to look beyond rusty Uzoho, Okoye, and start Adeleye?
Published: March 04, 2023
Francis Uzoho of Omonia Nicosia, Maduka Okoye of Watford and Adebayo Adeleye of Hapoel Jerusalem are Super Eagles' top three goalkeepers at the moment.
Uzoho and Okoye have made 27 and 16 appearances respectively for the Super Eagles, while Adeleye is yet to feature for the four-time African champions.
Both Uzoho and Okoye are struggling at the moment for their club sides. Uzoho has been an unused substitute for Omonia Nicosia in their last five games in the Cypriot First Division, while Okoye is yet to feature for Watford in the Championship.
Given their lack of game time, they would be match-rusty if called upon for international duty.
In contrast, Adeleye has played consistently for most of the season for Hapoel Jerusalem. He has started 18 games, including the last three for the Israeli outfit.
This means he will be sharper than his senior colleagues who are struggling for game time.
More so, it is a notorious fact that both Uzoho and Okoye are unreliable goalkeepers, having cost the Super Eagles on several occasions in major tournaments and qualifiers.
So if Adeleye is deemed good enough to get called up to the national team, it is time he is trusted and given enough games to prove his credentials as the first-choice goalkeeper.
