Why Everton manager Sean Dyche should consider role change for Alex Iwobi
Published: March 04, 2023
Alex Iwobi has played consistently for Everton in the Premier League this season. The Super Eagles midfielder has appeared in all 25 games the Toffees have played.
He has also been one of the shining lights in what has been a dismal season for the Toffees, scoring one goal and registering six assists.
The former Arsenal star not only has the most goal contributions in his side, but he also ranks first for the most passes into the final third and the most progress passes indicating his playmaking ability.
However, since the appointment of Sean Dyche, the Nigerian appears to be struggling. He is being played as a right or left midfielder in Everton's new formation.
This is in contrast to the role he occupied under former manager Frank Lampard, where he played mostly as either an attacking midfielder or a central midfielder.
Two of Iwobi's assists have come when being played as a central midfielder, three while playing as an attacking midfielder and just one when playing as a left midfielder.
With Everton battling to survive relegation, Dyche must begin to play to the strength of his key players of which Iwobi is one of them. He doesn't possess the skill to play as a right or left-sided midfielder consistently.
The former Burnley manager must find a way to move Iwobi back to central midfield or attacking midfield where he has thrived for most of the season for the Toffees.
This will enable Iwobi to restore his form and ultimately Everton's push to survive relegation.
