UEL top scorers : UEFA explains why Rashford is topping the rankings ahead of Boniface
Published: March 10, 2023
European football governing body UEFA has explained why Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is topping the Europa League goalscorers rankings ahead of Royale Union Saint-Gilloise star Victor Boniface.
Boniface was the star of the show as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise were forced to a 3-3 draw by Union Berlin in Germany, while Rashford needed less than six minutes to open the scoring in United's 4-1 rout of Real Betis at Old Trafford.
The Nigerian and England international are tied on five goals apiece in the race for the Europa League Golden Boot.
Boniface and Rashford have a goal involvement of six (5 goals, 1 assist) so UEFA has used a tie-breaker system to determine the leading scorer in the competition.
Players level on goals scored are ordered first on assists then on fewest minutes played.
"Rashford nominally tops the rankings: he and Boniface have both scored five and provided one assist, but the Englishman has played fewer minutes: 455 to Boniface's 518," UEFA.com wrote.
No Nigerian player has managed to win the Europa League top scorer award since the inception of the competition back in the 2009-2010 season.
