Huddersfield LB still eligible for Nigeria after being unused sub for Equatorial Guinea in AFCONQ

The Equatoguinean Football Federation have missed out on a golden opportunity to secure the international future of talented Huddersfield Town defender Charles Ondo. allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

The versatile 2003-born player earned a shock call-up to the Equatorial Guinea squad for their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches with Botswana this month.

Ondo has been named in Huddersfield Town's matchday squad on four occasions since joining the club on a scholarship deal in 2020, with the Terriers beating the likes of Norwich City, Stoke City, West Brom and Sheffield United to his signature.

Wearing the number 12 at the back of his jersey, Ondo was a non-playing substitute in both Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Botswana on March 24 and March 28.

Had he played, even for one second, he would have become cap-tied to Equatorial Guinea.

Born in the Spanish capital Madrid, Ondo is eligible to represent the Super Eagles through his father, Equatorial Guinea, where his mother originally hails from, and England, where he grew up.

The 19-year-old offers versatility as he is capable of playing as a left-back, wing-back and winger.

Ondo was farmed out on loan to  League of Ireland First Division team Waterford FC in February 2023.
